Coursework

The Certificate program is a year long program for PhD students and postdocs in science and engineering. The program provides an introduction to and hands-on experience in developing new business ventures designed to commercialize research. Students take four courses in technology management, innovation and entrepreneurship and participate in interdisciplinary practicums alongside MBA students and under the guidance of GSM faculty, investors and entrepreneurs.

Fall Quarter 2012

MGT 251 Management of Innovation
Describes the processes of creativity and innovation and provides students with the means to craft interdependent innovation strategies, work practices and cultures for managing innovation in organizations.

MGT 298 I Business Development Clinic
Students learn to work closely in small, interdisciplinary teams to synthesize technical, strategic and marketing needs and resources into designs for new ventures. Topics include market research, financial modeling, prototyping and resource acquisition. Teams develop business models for a wide range of emerging technology and market opportunities.

Winter Quarter 2013

MGT 244 New and Small Business Ventures
Emphasizes starting a new business venture or managing a small business during its formative stages.

Spring Quarter 2013

  • Submit a letter of support by email from your advisor.

The letter of support should indicate your advisor supports your participation in the program.

We will hold interviews in July. Applicants are notified late July of acceptance.

The BD Fellows program is open ONLY to UC Davis graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
